T is for Tychicus: An Important Team Member

I grew up watching the Pittsburgh Pirates play at Forbes Field.  Like other fans of that time, I exploded in glee when Bill Mazeroski ht the home run in the bottom of the ninth of the seventh game of the 1960 World Series to beat the Yankees.  But Dick Scofield was my favorite Pirate.

Name: “Fortuitous”
Date: 1st Century AD
Identification:  Christian of Asia Minor; a tireless fellow worker with Paul
Story Line:  Tychicus traveled to Ephesus, Colosse, Crete, and more
Read it in the Bible:  Acts 20: 1-6; Ephesians 6:21-24; Colossians 4: 7-9

Scofield was a utility infielder. Not a starter or a star, he was nevertheless invaluable to the team.   He could play second base, shortstop, even third base.  Utility infielders can go in for almost anybody and make a contribution.

Tychicus was the utility infielder of the early church.  A native of Ephesus, he accompanied Paul on his trip to collect the offering for the poor of the Jerusalem church (Acts 20:4).  He served as a courier for Paul’s letter to Ephesus (Ephesians 6:21), Colossians (Colossians 4:7), and Philemon.  Probably Tychicus accompanied Trophimus and Titus to deliver Paul’s second Corinthian letter (2 Corinthians 8: 16-24),  Later Paul sent him to Crete to assist Titus (Titus 3:12). And even later still, Paul informed Timothy that he had sent Tychicus to Ephesus (2 Timothy 4:12).  Tychicus always had his bags packed. Always had a job to do, and always was willing to take on any challenge.

Has God called you to be a Tychicus?  Does He want you to be willing to do any job, teach any group, or be anything the church needs you to be? If so, be happy and do those things well.  You may not be a starter or a star, but your contribution to the team will be enormous.  Be grateful that God has a place for you on the roster.
